Survey examines fitness levels of major U.S. cities
Using the results of a survey conducted last summer, Men’s Fitness magazine has ranked the nation’s 50 largest cities according to their level of fitness. In its February issue, the magazine names Houston as the fattest city, while Colorado Springs takes top honors as the fittest.
The annual ranking is based on 16 criteria, including exercise, weight, vegetable/fruit consumption, junk food consumption, alcohol consumption, smoking, television use, air quality, water quality, traffic congestion, the number of recreation facilities in the city and participation in sports.
Five of the 25 Fat Cities are in Texas. Chicago and Detroit round out the top three fattest cities.
California communities — eight in all — dominate the Fit Cities ranking, but Colorado cities (Colorado Springs and Denver) occupy the top two spots. San Diego comes in third.
