American City & County names the Municipal Leader of the Year
AMERICAN CITY &COUNTY has selected the New York Fire Department as the 2001 Municipal Leader of the Year. The award is presented annually by the magazine to recognize outstanding leadership in municipal government. This year marks the first time the award has been presented to an agency rather than to an individual.
The FDNY has exemplified leadership in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The New York firefighters have been the focal point of a national rally to fight terrorism, and their response to the Twin Towers disaster has reminded us all of the risks inherent in fire fighting and the role firefighters play in protecting cities and counties every day.
The Municipal Leader of the Year award will be presented to FDNY at the National League of Cities’ Congress of Cities, which is being held Dec. 4-8 in Atlanta. You can read a profile of the agency and its award-winning work in the November issue of AMERICAN CITY &COUNTY.
