Seattle council pushes for water reservoir covers
Seattle City Council President Margaret Pageler is asking the city to hurry a long-term plan to install covers on the city’s reservoirs. The request grew out of heightened fears of a bioterrorism attack, according to the Seattle Times. The project initially was scheduled for completion in 2004 or 2005.
According to the newspaper, Seattle is one of only a few cities with open reservoirs, which are protected with surveillance cameras, guards and intrusion alarms. Pageler has asked Seattle Public Utility to present a plan for covering the reservoirs at the Oct. 23 meeting of the city council’s Water Resources, Solid Waste and Public Health Committee. A spokesperson for SPU called Pagelerês request “wise public policy.”
Reservoir covers are expected to cost from $3 million to $5 million each.
