Philadelphia has launched an intelligent transportation system that allows motorists to better plan travel routes and avoid congestion. The Digital Traffic Pulse Sensor Network, developed by locally based Mobility Technologies and the U.S. Department of Transportation, uses solar-powered roadside sensors to report traffic speed, volume and travel times.
The data collected by the sensors is updated every 60 seconds and is distributed on the company’s Web site www.traffic.com and on local radio and television stations. Soon, the company will provide motorists with wireless service that will include personalized traffic updates and alert messages.
