The institute conducts research, develops policy and provides technical assistance. It organized the first national brownfields conference in 1990 and has continued to coordinate forums on the topic. Educational materials focus on problems, opportunities and available tools for redeveloping brownfields, as well as on the integration of cleanup and economic development. The institute’s “State of the States” report summarizes the programs – e.g., financing, voluntary cleanup and incentives for private-sector involvement – implemented by each state to target brownfields redevelopment.
