USCM announces livability awards
The U.S. Conference of Mayors has announced the winners of the 1999 City Livability Awards Program. The awards, sponsored by Houston-based Waste Management, recognize and honor mayors for exemplary leadership in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in America’s cities.
Outstanding Achievement awards were presented to Mayors Donald Plusquellic, Akron, Ohio; Joseph Ganim, Bridgeport, Conn.; Gene Daniels, Paramount, Calif.; Dennis Archer, Detroit; Bruce Furness, Fargo, N.D.; Morris Lanning, Moorhead, Minn.; Paul Helmke, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Gus Morrison, Fremont, Calif.; Bruce Tobey, Gloucester, Mass.; Patrick McManus, Lynn, Mass.; Allen Settle, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and John McKeon, West Orange, N.J.
In addition, 23 cities received Honorable Mention Citations. New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial received the Richard J. Daley Award for hosting the annual conference of mayors.
